DataCore Releases SANmelody 2.0 - A Breakthrough in Storage Utility, Data Protection and Price Performance
Features Include 'Open' Auto-Grow Capacity, Business Critical iSCSI, Microsoft & VMware Virtual Infrastructure Support, and 'Top' Price Performance
FORT LAUDERDALE -- May 4, 2005 -- DataCore Software, today introduced SANmelodyTM 2.0 disk server software, which dramatically reduces the cost of enterprise-class
storage capabilities down to the levels of the PC world. Small-to-midsized businesses (SMBs) can now benefit from the power and flexibility of a virtual infrastructure
that delivers hardware-independent storage utility, adds advanced data protection and automates serving disk space to clients over LANs (via iSCSI) and storage area
networks (SANs). SANmelody 2.0 enables network administrators to maximize storage utilization, consolidate resources and manage their storage assets as a utility.
SANmelody 2.0 delivers a range of network storage services to multiple application and virtual server platforms, adds robust data mirroring over LANs to improve
business continuance and uptime, and provides the industry’s first affordable, ‘open’ and auto-grow ‘virtual capacity’ solution.
SANmelody 2.0 - Redefines ‘virtual capacity’ automation and ‘open’ choice
A key feature and differentiator of SANmelody 2.0 is virtual capacity, which provides enormously large, multi-terabyte virtual disks to application servers. This
breakthrough in automation allows storage to be deployed without the fear of having to shutdown systems and incur disruptions every time applications hit the "system
has run out of space" wall. SANmelody’s ‘virtual capacity’ differentiates itself on two fronts. First, the storage being served is hardware-independent. By giving
users the ability to buy their hardware of choice from any vendor, they are armed with the purchasing power they need. Users can leverage SANmelody 2.0’s
hardware-independence by utilizing disks of their own choosing, such as SATA, FC and SCSI. DataCore does not force users to pay premiums and buy proprietary
single vendor disk solutions to get this industry advance. Secondly, SANmelody 2.0 brings this high-end capability down market in price. Pricing for the ‘virtual
capacity’ option on SANmelody platforms sets a new threshold of entry, with prices starting at under $900.00.
"The statement DataCore has made with SANmelody 2.0 is that we are committed to bringing virtual capacity to the broader market in addition to the higher-end
market," said George Teixeira, president and CEO, DataCore Software. "Through SANmelody 2.0, we have brought enterprise-class storage virtualization capabilities
and innovation to the mass market."
SANmelody 2.0 - Industry first, business-critical iSCSI failover and enterprise-level data protection using your existing LAN connections
The product delivers the ability to deliver or "serve" storage over Ethernet or Internet Protocol (IP). Up until now, storage was either directly attached
through a special connection or required a sophisticated Fibre Channel, which is an expensive proposition. DataCore’s SANmelody 2.0 enables users to serve and
utilize disks over their conventional network, such as their Ethernet port.
"If companies are trying to provide high-availability storage and all they have is Ethernet, this product provides the high-availability they are seeking
with the reliability of enterprise-class storage," said Ziya Aral, CTO, DataCore Software. "And companies can accomplish this through their standard, existing
infrastructure - be that Ethernet, SAN, or whatever they may have in place."
SANmelody 2.0 - Fundamental building block for virtual infrastructures - virtual storage: adds flexibility, optimizes resource use and enables rapid response to change
Virtualization is not just for servers. The reason companies have virtualized their servers is because they have sought better consolidation, common
administration and faster response to business demands. In storage, that is exactly the same situation. Most companies effectively use only 25% of their
total storage capabilities. When companies can pool that capacity and network it across different applications and users, they attain much higher utilization
rates, typically 75% or more.
"A very significant trend is that virtual servers have proven to the marketplace to be both easy to deploy and very effective for utilization and
productivity," said Teixeira. "DataCore does the same thing for users with storage. With SANmelody 2.0, users are deploying flexible storage networks
to serve Microsoft Virtual Server and VMware systems. The combination makes sense, because users want a complete virtual infrastructure that optimizes
their server and storage resources and adds flexibility to handle constant change requests."
The SANmelody product is ideal for companies seeking to build a complete virtual infrastructure.
SANmelody 2.0 - World-record price performance that accelerates workloads, provides faster disk-to-disk back-ups, and delivers better response
Finally, the Storage Performance Council results acknowledge SANmelody 2.0 as the world-record holder for price/performance. The numbers, which are
available at www.storageperformance.org, indicate that aside from solid-state storage systems, DataCore's SANmelody-based Disk Server using iSCSI or
Fibre Channel delivers the best price/performance in the marketplace.
SANmelody 2.0 - More Capabilities
- SANmelody 2.0 DataCore has enhanced its support for Microsoft environments. DataCore now supports key Windows Server 2003 Storage Services in SANmelody 2.0,
such as Virtual Disk Services (VDS), Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS), and Multipath I/O (MPIO). Administrators benefit from these enhancements since they are
able to use a standard methodology to invoke disk services, set up snapshots and support multi-path redundancy across a spectrum of workloads and storage devices.
- SANmelody 2.0 has also enhanced its support for Microsoft Windows Storage Server platforms, enabling partners to add file serving capabilities and build
hybrid iSCSI NAS/SAN appliances and systems.
- SANmelody 2.0 provides a powerful new Microsoft Windows volume pass-through feature. It provides the capability to easily migrate, import, and manage
existing live data that resides on Windows file system volumes. These volumes can take advantage of SANmelody's features (e.g. benefit from performance
acceleration) and in turn be served back to application servers (including Windows-based NAS/file servers such as Microsoft Windows Storage Server) over
the LAN (via iSCSI) and/or storage area network (SAN). These existing volumes can continue to be used normally or the live data can be seamlessly migrated
in real-time to other virtual volumes or onto newer disk technologies that are under SANmelody management and control. Then the older volumes can be removed
from service without impacting operations.
- SANmelody 2.0 adds additional support for Microsoft Clusters.
- SANmelody 2.0 features a range of iSCSI and IP SAN security features to better protect the network from security threats.
- SANmelody 2.0 has enhanced ease-of-use and operation. The user interface has simplified and improved many storage administrative tasks and a Windows
Wizard installation process has significantly reduced the time to set up a production iSCSI SAN down to a few minutes.
